Americans love a good true crime podcast. A June 15, 2023 report released by PEW Research, profiling the top-ranked podcasts in the U.S., indicates that 24% of the top-ranked podcasts are true crime. But, probably more relevant to the NH tech Alliance, PEW also recently reported that one in five podcast listeners say they listen to a podcast almost every day, tuning in for “entertainment, learning and simply to have something to listen to while doing something else.” PEWS’s studies show listenership is clearly related to age, race and ethnicity, education, income, and gender.

This data represent an opportunity, and in this interactive workshop the Tech Alliance will review the PEW reports to help you identify those most relevant to your organization as it considers launching a podcast.

This type of research will form the critical foundation of your podcast concept brief, which will provide a strategic blueprint for moving forward with production. Included will be a review of questions one would confront at this stage, including those regarding audience, messaging, tone, format, and style. The technological options for production and distribution will be shared to also address details sometimes overlooked, including copyright issues, talent releases, and amplification. Finally, an audience member will have the opportunity to record a podcast through the remote production facilities of the Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication.

Attendees will be provided with hard copies and links to resources to help your business succeed at podcasting.

Presenter Kristen Nevious, whose first encounter with communication media technology was a beautiful baby blue Smith Corona manual typewriter in the 1970s, has been Director of Franklin Pierce University’s Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication since 2004, where she operates the video and audio production studios and low-power FM station.

Her team of students and staff just completed shooting episode 150 of NHPBS’s The State We’re In, and it produces four award-winning podcasts in collaboration with the Granite State News Collaborative, which she co-founded in 2018.

Media production is just one way the Fitzwater Center meets its charge to engage intellects, challenge perspectives, teach skills and help people find their voices in the public discourse that is essential to the health of our democracy. Nevious directs Franklin Pierce University Polling and delivers programming that takes advantage of the University’s location in the home of the First-in-the-Nation Primary. Other programming includes The Presidency and the Press, a high school summer program; PoliticsFitzU, a collegiate political reporting unit that has earned national press credentials to the national political conventions covering presidential races since 2008; and Ravens Sports Network, which livestreams every home game on NE10 Now.

Her undergraduate and graduate degrees are in journalism, and she has taught at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, Southern Missouri State University, the University of Southern Mississippi, and the University of South Dakota, where she earned tenure.Kristen Nevious is the chair of New Hampshire Public Broadcasting’s Community Advisory Board, and is a member of the New England Newspaper and Press Association’s Board of Directors, the New Hampshire Press Association Board of Directors, and the Journalism Education Foundation of New England Board of Directors. In 2018, she was named the Journalism Educator of the Year by NENPA.
